Reviews | Just Laugh Comedy Club Dundee
Date: Saturday 5th March 2005
Compere: Bruce Fummey
Comedians: Vladimir McTavish, Des McLean, John Scott & Paul Pirie
On Saturday evening, the London nightclub played host to the first of Bruce Fummey’s Dundee Just Laugh comedy nights. The funny man from Perth compered the sold out show and proved why Just Laugh has been so successful in Perth for the last 6 months.
First on the evening’s bill was Vladimir McTavish, a Glaswegian comic with years of experience under his belt, whose gags about the Michael Jackson trial, a questionnaire about drinking and living in London soon had the initally quiet crowd roaring with laughter.
Next up was local boy Paul Pirie, who used his local knowledge to connect with the crowd, who responded with loud laughter and huge applause. His “magic trick” was one of the funniest parts of his routine and received major laughs, and he looks set to do well in the comedy scene.
Third on the bill was John Scott, who says that without Billy Connelly, he would not have gotten into comedy. Being based in Newcastle, the “homeless Bee-Gee” highlighted the similarities of “Jocks and Geordies”, which the crowd showed their appreciation for with thunderous applause. A refreshing change was his sexual humour, which came from a female perspective, and was well received by the crowd.
Headlining the evening was Des McLean, another Glaswegian who sent the crowd into a comedy frenzy with his imitation of Neds and Billy Connelly. By the end of his set, the crowd were howling with laughter and more than a few sides were being clutched.
If the success of Saturday night is anything to go by, next month's Just Laugh seems set to be a huge night out in Dundee.
