Reviews | Just Laugh Comedy Club Perth
Date: Friday 5th November 2004
Compere: Bruce Fummey
Comedians: Gary Little, Quentin Reynolds, Patrick Rolink and Gordon Brunton
Just three months since it first opened its doors, monthly comedy club Just Laugh has undoubtedly secured a loyal following with tickets selling out for its November gig in record time.
This month’s line up promised to be entertaining and there’s no doubt that compere Bruce Fummey is a dab hand at booking and introducing us to some of Scotland’s leading funny men.
Opening the evening was one of Glasgow’s finest, Gary Little. Relatively new to the comedy scene in Scotland, Gary’s meteoric rise to comic fame is down to his able talent for extracting the humour from everyday life. Gary took us on a droll tour of his ma’s “buy one get one free” obsession topping it off with some amusing observations about toilet paper. Is there no end to what this man can make funny?
Gary set the pace for the acts to follow: Quentin Reynolds (no, honestly, that is his real name!) and Patrick Rolink, both from Airdrie. Quentin, or “Q” as he is more commonly known is possibly the poshest comedian on the block and uses this to his best advantage. What’s not to laugh at when the funny man on stage is called Quentin?
Veteran comic Patrick, a self confessed lover of food, ably followed Q, tackling all things funny. Not afraid to take on any controversy, and as he puts it himself, who’s going to argue with him at his size?! Religion, politics and the topical question of obesity were all on the comical agenda for this Airdrieonian.
Closing the set, Edinburgh man Gordon Brunton took on what was now a highly excitable crowd. Despite a disconcertingly similar hairstyle to Morrisey, Brunton’s style was engaging with a clear eye for the comical detail of family life. A confident and comfortable presence on stage, his set was a formidable end to an evening of laughter and entertainment.
Just Laugh’s next gig is on Friday 3rd December. Tickets, priced £8, are available now from Goldrush Records.
