Reviews | Just Laugh Comedy Club Perth
Date: Friday 7th October 2005
Compere: Bruce Fummey
Comedians: Neil Dougan, Tony Wilkes, Colin Ramone and Bruce Morton
We enjoyed an intimate evening of skilful and varied comedy at Bliss & Envy on Friday 7 October. Much of the skill and variety are supplied by our 'host and compere" Bruce Fummey, whose local knowledge, irrepressible energy and verbal gymnastics move us from chuckle to guffaw in moments. Bruce would be the first to admit that he puts the 'belly' in belly-laugh.
Bruce kicked off the evening, raising the biggest laugh when he told us he had a day-job as a school teacher!
Neil Dougan from Northern Ireland kept us highly entertained with his astute observations on life - sniping gently but effectively at attitudes and behaviour we see in other people. Not least the gripe that the al Qaeda cell discovered in Belfast was 'coming over here and taking our jobs'.
Tony Wilkes took over and stunned us with tales of self-deception around diet and health. He has cleverly chosen topical material which will generate louder laughs as he gains experience in matching his presentation to the audience.
Colin Ramone bounced into the spotlight and quickly caught our attention with his fast-paced, witty and energetic routine. His great timing earned warm and appreciative responses from the audience.
Bruce Morton topped the evening off with lots of laughs drawn from his experience of ageing - if we weren't laughing at ourselves we recognised affectionately our parents and grandparents. As he commented in an aside to Bruce F after raising a great laugh from a crude remark, 'I think I've found your audience's level now'! He certainly justified his headline place and we were delighted to see him back in Perth.
Bruce Fummey has given Perth people a new reason to go out on a Friday night - and there is no better reason than to have a laugh. He attracts great acts and gives opportunities to young performers. Both he and they deserve our support and congratulation. Bruce next appears in Perth at the A K Bell Library Theatre on Friday 21 October in his own show 'The Greek, The Apple and The Time Machine' - go with a group of friends for a really fun night out.
